WANA (Jun 28) – Iran’s Parliament Speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, said Tehran’s objectives are to end the war in Lebanon, facilitate the return of displaced residents, and secure the withdrawal of the Israeli regime from Lebanese territory.

 

During a telephone conversation with Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, Ghalibaf said that ending the conflict in Lebanon and safeguarding the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity constitute a key part of the first clause of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding between Iran and the United States.

 

He added that Iran is “seriously pursuing” these goals, including ending the war, enabling displaced people to return to their homes, and ending what he described as Israel’s occupation of Lebanese territory.

 

Ghalibaf also said that during the Switzerland talks, after the Iranian negotiating delegation raised what it described as violations of this clause, the parties agreed to establish a Conflict Control Unit involving Iran, the United States, and Lebanon to monitor and oversee the implementation of the agreement’s provisions related to Lebanon.

 

For his part, Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri said Iran’s efforts during the Switzerland talks served the interests of the Lebanese people, but claimed that the Israeli regime is attempting to circumvent the restoration of Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity under the Islamabad understanding.

 

Berri also described the Washington understanding between Lebanon and Israel as “a conspiracy and a source of sedition.”

 

The two speakers emphasized the need to convene the Conflict Control Unit as soon as possible to oversee efforts aimed at controlling and ending the war in Lebanon.
