WANA (Sep 09) – Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs has reacted to the adoption of a resolution against Tehran at the IAEA Board of Governors, asserting that Western powers cannot offset their political failures nor achieve their goals at the UN Security Council through such atmosphere-building.

In a message posted on X on Wednesday evening, Kazem Gharibabadi accused Western nations of attacking Iranian nuclear facilities under safeguards and disrupting normal verification procedures, only to use that resulting disruption as a pretext to push through resolutions at the IAEA Board of Governors.

Gharibabadi emphasized that these political maneuvers would neither compensate for the failure of their policies and actions nor enable them to advance their agendas at the UN Security Council.

His comments followed the adoption of a resolution drafted by the United States and the E3—France, the United Kingdom, and Germany—targeting Iran’s peaceful nuclear program. The 35-nation IAEA Board of Governors passed the measure with 23 votes in favor, 8 abstentions, and 3 votes against.

In separate remarks prior to the vote, Reza Najafi, Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to International Organizations in Vienna, condemned the draft resolution as politically motivated, legally flawed, and detached from realities, warning that the move undermines trust, cooperation, and diplomacy.

Speaking at the Board meeting, Najafi characterized the resolution as a political instrument rather than a technical document, stating that it distorted legal standards to serve as a tool for political pressure.
