Gharibabadi: Displacement Remains Destiny for Millions Until Intervention Ends
WANA (Jun 20) – On World Refugee Day, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs stated that displacement will remain the inevitable fate of millions of people as long as major world powers persist with war, foreign intervention, and discriminatory policies.
In a statement posted on social media platform X marking both World Refugee Day and the 75th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention, Kazem Gharibabadi questioned why global displacement figures continue to climb annually despite decades of international commitments and promises.
The United Nations designated June 20 as World Refugee Day to honor displaced persons globally. According to recent UN data, an influx of 5.4 million newly displaced individuals over the past year has pushed the global population of refugees and those in similar situations to a staggering 41.6 million.
The Islamic Republic of Iran has historically borne a significant share of this global crisis, serving as a host to one of the world’s largest refugee populations—primarily consisting of millions of Afghan nationals—for over four decades.
