WANA (Feb 28) – During airstrikes carried out early this morning by Israel and the United States on areas in Iran, a girls’ elementary school in Minab County, located in Hormozgan Province, was directly hit. According to local officials, the attack has resulted in heavy casualties among students.

 

The Political, Security, and Social Deputy Governor of Hormozgan Province stated that a girls’ elementary school was struck during the attacks and that, so far, five students have lost their lives. Meanwhile, the Governor of Minab, in a separate statement, reported that according to updated figures, 85 students have been killed and another 92 injured. Local authorities emphasized that rescue operations are still ongoing and that the casualty figures may change.

According to field reports, the girls’ school “Shajareh Tayyebeh” was targeted during school hours. Minutes after the initial strike, a nearby clinic that had begun treating the wounded was also damaged in a subsequent attack. So far, no precise details have been released regarding the extent of damage to the clinic or the number of any additional casualties.

 

Iranian officials have described the operation as “an attack against civilians,” stating that it took place concurrently with ongoing negotiations. According to them, carrying out such an operation in the midst of diplomatic talks will have significant political and security consequences.

Iran’s Foreign Minister condemned the attack on a girls’ primary school in the city of Minab in a post on X, warning that the incident “will not go unanswered.”

 

In the message, accompanied by an image of the destroyed school building, he said the strike occurred in broad daylight while the school was full of young students. According to him, dozens of children were killed in the incident. He described the attack as “a crime against the Iranian people,” attributed responsibility to the United States and Israel, and stressed that the Islamic Republic of Iran reserves its right to respond.

 

Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, in a separate statement, described the actions of the United States and Israel as “aggressive and unjustified,” stating that the targeting of Iranian cities — including the strike on a primary school in Minab, Hormozgan Province, which resulted in the deaths and injuries of dozens of young schoolgirls — constitutes “a blatant crime.”

 

The spokesperson emphasized the need for an international response, adding that the world must stand against this injustice and that the United Nations Security Council should act immediately in line with its responsibilities under the UN Charter.

The President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, has issued a formal statement condemning the attack on a girls’ primary school in the city of Minab that resulted in the deaths of dozens of students.

 

In the statement, the president described the event as a “heart-rending tragedy,” expressing deep condolences to the families of the victims and to the people of Minab. He said the incident had caused profound grief across the nation and deeply affected public sentiment.

 

Pezeshkian characterised the attack on civilian facilities as an inhumane act and called for immediate and comprehensive medical assistance for the injured, along with sustained humanitarian support for those affected.

 

He also instructed emergency services, healthcare providers, and relevant authorities to mobilize all available resources to ensure urgent treatment for the wounded and to provide psychological and social support to grieving families.

 

Concluding his message, the president paid tribute to those who lost their lives, wished a swift recovery for the injured, and expressed hopes for patience and strength for the bereaved.
