WANA (Mar 19) – The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has warned that any attack on nuclear facilities or their surrounding areas must never be carried out, stressing the serious risks such actions pose to nuclear safety and security.

Rafael Grossi made the remarks in response to reports received from Iran about a projectile impact near the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant. “While no damage was caused to the reactor itself or to personnel, any attack on nuclear facilities or in their vicinity violates the seven indispensable pillars of nuclear safety and security during an armed conflict and must never take place,” he said.

Iranian authorities reported that on Tuesday evening, a structure located approximately 350 meters from the reactor at the Bushehr facility was struck. Officials added that the incident caused no financial, technical, or human damage, and that all sections of the plant remain fully safe and operational.

Iran’s National Nuclear Safety System Center had earlier confirmed the incident, stating that the projectile hit the site’s perimeter without affecting infrastructure or operations.

Grossi also addressed Iran’s nuclear program, stating that the IAEA has found no concrete evidence of a systematic effort by Iran to develop nuclear weapons. “From a technical standpoint, reaching higher levels was possible, but this remains a hypothesis and cannot serve as definitive grounds for war,” he said.

He reiterated the importance of fully respecting nuclear safety principles, warning that any military activity near such facilities could lead to serious and unpredictable consequences.
