Grossi: No Nuclear Crisis Yet in Iran, But Threats Persist
WANA (Jun 20) – The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) stated: “The Agency continues to monitor and assess the situation regarding Israeli attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities and will publicly release updated reports.”
Rafael Grossi, Director General of the IAEA, added on Thursday evening: “The Agency regularly publishes its latest reports on developments and their potential consequences for human health and the environment.”
Grossi also claimed: “The Agency is ready to respond immediately in the event of a nuclear crisis.”
He continued: “IAEA inspectors remain in Iran and are prepared to be dispatched to Iran’s nuclear facilities as long as the conditions permit. The Agency is present in Iran and this presence will continue. Safeguards monitoring under Iran’s commitments to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) will resume when conditions allow.”
Grossi, who had previously facilitated Israel’s baseless claims against Iran through a biased and politically charged report at the Board of Governors, called for “maximum restraint from all parties to prevent further escalation.”
He claimed: “I am prepared to travel and consult with parties to help protect nuclear facilities and ensure the peaceful use of nuclear technology in line with IAEA directives.”
Grossi stated: “The intensification of military tensions poses a serious threat to human lives. Such escalations could also lead to hazardous nuclear radiation impacting nature and human health. Moreover, these conflicts delay irreplaceable diplomatic efforts to ensure Iran does not seek nuclear weapons.”
This claim comes despite Grossi previously acknowledging that there is no evidence the Islamic Republic of Iran intends to build a nuclear weapon.
Despite his biased remarks, Grossi asserted: “The Agency is prepared to prevent a nuclear crisis based on its protocols. However, constructive and professional dialogue must take place as soon as possible.”
Referring to Israeli attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities and the limited damage caused to sites such as Natanz, he emphasized: “So far, no nuclear crisis has occurred in Iran. But Iran holds significant nuclear reserves and materials, which could potentially become crisis-inducing if attacked by Israel.”
He also pointed to the ongoing exchange of information between Iranian authorities and the Agency, stating: “Under the current challenging conditions, the Agency needs to receive regular technical data about Iran’s nuclear facilities and related infrastructure. This information is vital for keeping the international community informed and for designing effective responses in case of emergencies in Iran.”
Grossi further said that he remains in constant communication with other countries in the region.
These latest remarks by the IAEA chief come as Kazem Gharibabadi, Deputy for Legal and International Affairs at Iran’s Foreign Ministry, criticized both Grossi’s public stances and his recent report. Gharibabadi stated that Grossi has consistently tried to portray Iran’s peaceful nuclear program as a threat.
Gharibabadi added: “The Director General’s role in enabling Israeli aggression will be documented and submitted to the UN Security Council.”
He further stated: “Unfortunately, the Director General has failed to condemn repeated Israeli attacks on Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities. It is evident that he has become a tool in the hands of the Israeli regime and the U.S., and through his actions, he has become complicit in the crime of armed aggression. He is accountable for the blood that has been shed.”
The Deputy Foreign Minister concluded: “Mr. Grossi has proven that he is not qualified to lead international organizations.”
