WANA (Jun 02) – During a visit to Greece, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi stated that both Iran and the United States have the political will to reach a nuclear agreement, but stressed that transparency is a vital component of any deal. He acknowledged that serious obstacles remain on the path to an agreement.

On Iran’s nuclear program, Grossi repeated concerns over Tehran’s uranium enrichment, noting that Iran is the only non-nuclear-armed country enriching uranium to such high levels. “Enrichment itself is not banned, but Iran continues at levels that raise international concern,” he said.

He also claimed that the IAEA has found traces of enriched uranium at undeclared sites in Iran and criticized Tehran for failing to provide adequate explanations despite nearly five years of inquiry.

“We ask simple questions—why is it here, what was happening, where is the equipment—and we haven’t received clear answers,” Grossi said, adding that the Agency has no political agenda.

Grossi further noted that while some cooperation with Tehran exists, several key questions remain unanswered. He also mentioned the IAEA’s ongoing efforts to work with both Tehran and Moscow on nuclear safety issues.

In Athens, Grossi met with Greece’s Prime Minister, ministers, and business leaders to brief them on the status of nuclear safety at Ukrainian facilities and the ongoing Iran-U.S. nuclear talks.

Further, Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), defended the IAEA’s reporting on Iran, claiming it has been impartial and transparent during a press conference in Cairo on Monday. “The Agency will play a guarantor role in any agreement concerning Iran’s nuclear program,” he asserted.

He emphasized the need for the peaceful use of nuclear energy during a press conference in Cairo on Monday. “When it comes to nuclear energy, everything must be peaceful,” Grossi stated.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, Grossi also expressed support for ongoing diplomatic efforts in the Middle East, particularly regarding Iran’s nuclear program. “We support the efforts of Steve Witkoff, the U.S. President’s envoy to the Middle East, in addressing the Iranian nuclear file,” he said.
