WANA (Sep 08) – Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), reported progress in talks between Iran and the IAEA in his opening speech at the agency’s quarterly Board of Governors meeting. The meeting, which started today in Vienna, will continue until Friday, September 12.

Grossi stated, “Progress has been made regarding Iran, and we hope to reach a successful outcome in the coming days to resume our cooperation with Iran.”

Iran suspended its cooperation with the IAEA following recent attacks on its nuclear facilities, which are under the IAEA’s safeguards agreement. Tehran cited Grossi’s failure to fulfill his legal duties in protecting Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities and his biased technical reports on Iran’s nuclear program as the main reasons for the suspension. Despite this, some level of technical discussions between the two parties continues, and Iran has stated it is reviewing the shape of future cooperation with the agency.

Grossi emphasized that Iran’s safeguards agreement with the IAEA is still in effect, and the agency has been closely monitoring developments in Iran. He particularly referred to the Iranian Parliament’s June 25 resolution to suspend cooperation with the IAEA, which was confirmed by President Raisi on July 2. “We have cautiously followed the recent developments and are ready to address Iran’s concerns and suggestions, as long as they align with the comprehensive safeguards agreement,” he said.

The IAEA Director General also mentioned the recent visit of agency inspectors to Iran to monitor the process of replacing fuel at the Bushehr nuclear power plant.

In conclusion, Grossi stressed the importance of cooperation and the full implementation of both parties’ commitments, saying, “The full implementation of the safeguards agreement between Iran and the IAEA is crucial for improving the overall situation. We still have time, although not much, but as long as there is goodwill and a clear sense of responsibility, positive outcomes are achievable.”
