WANA (Sep 24) – In their second meeting in New York, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi discussed the continuation of diplomacy and ways to prevent escalating tensions over Iran’s nuclear issue.

On Tuesday evening, Rafael Grossi, the IAEA Director General, met with Araghchi for the second time in two days. Araghchi is in New York to attend the annual session of the UN General Assembly.

The meeting, which followed ongoing consultations on Iran’s nuclear program, focused on sustaining diplomatic efforts and avoiding further tensions over the matter.

Grossi had also met with Araghchi on Monday, September 21, at Iran’s Permanent Mission to the UN in New York, where the two sides held talks on Iran’s nuclear program.

This latest encounter came after Araghchi’s meeting with the foreign ministers of the three European countries and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.

On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Grossi told Reuters that “intense discussions” are underway between him, Iran, the European powers, and the United States in search of a solution.

He added: “We only have a few hours or a few days to see whether something is achievable, and this is the effort we are all engaged in.”

Earlier, on September 8, following three rounds of negotiations between Iran and the IAEA in Tehran and Vienna, Araghchi and Grossi had reached an understanding in Cairo on a new framework for cooperation between Iran and the Agency.
