WANA (Jun 09) – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed concern over rising tensions in the Middle East, calling on all parties to respect ceasefire agreements in Iran, Lebanon, and the Gaza Strip and to refrain from actions that could undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts.

 

Guterres, in a statement delivered by his deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq, voiced deep concern over the renewed escalation in the region and urged all sides to immediately halt attacks, exercise maximum restraint, and avoid any steps that could further destabilize the situation.

 

The statement emphasized that all parties should fully adhere to existing ceasefire arrangements in Lebanon, Iran, and Gaza and refrain from actions that could aggravate tensions or jeopardize diplomatic initiatives.

 

Guterres also expressed concern over Israel’s decision to close Gaza’s border crossings, reiterating his call for their immediate reopening to ensure the rapid, safe, and unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid throughout the enclave.

 

Addressing maritime security, the UN chief stressed that the rights and freedoms of navigation, in accordance with international law, must be respected. He urged all parties to fulfill their obligations under international law and take every possible precaution to protect civilians.

 

The Secretary-General further reiterated that there is no military solution to the conflicts in the Middle East and that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only viable path toward lasting peace. He called on all relevant actors to work toward diplomatic solutions that advance regional and international peace and security.
