WANA (Aug 10) – Hojjat al-Islam Hossein Taeb has been appointed as the new head of the Basij Organization of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) by order of Iran’s Supreme Leader.

Ayatollah Seyed Mojtaba Khamenei, Commander-in-Chief of Iran’s Armed Forces, issued a decree appointing Taeb as the head of the IRGC Basij Organization.

The decree referred to the “honorable martyrdom” of Major General Gholamreza Soleimani, the previous head of the Basij Organization, and cited Taeb’s commitment, capabilities, and extensive experience as reasons for his appointment.

The order outlined several priorities for the new Basij chief, including expanding the culture of Basij and resistance, strengthening popular networks and public participation, enhancing training and awareness programs, utilizing modern technologies to address security threats, expanding volunteer and social service groups, and promoting the Basij model as an example of popular resistance.

Hossein Taeb has previously held several key positions within the IRGC. He served as the head of the IRGC Intelligence Organization from 2009 to 2022, before becoming an advisor to the IRGC commander-in-chief.

Taeb, who joined the IRGC in 1982, previously served as deputy commander of the Basij Resistance Force and later became its commander. With his latest appointment, he returns to the Basij structure and takes charge of one of the Islamic Republic’s largest organized public networks.

During his tenure as head of the IRGC Intelligence Organization, the institution was involved in various security operations, including countering espionage networks, pursuing organized crime cases, and investigating economic corruption cases.

Among the most prominent cases associated with his tenure were the arrests of several individuals accused of security-related activities, including foreign-linked espionage cases and the prosecution of major economic offenders.
