WANA (Jul 19) – The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced that it is reviewing reports of an attack on the under-construction Darkhovin nuclear power plant site in Iran, but refrained from identifying the perpetrator or condemning the strike.

 

The statement came after the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) reported that the United States had carried out an early morning attack on the Darkhovin nuclear site. In a post on X, the IAEA said it was assessing reports of an overnight strike on the construction site.

 

According to the agency, the Darkhovin facility is still in the early stages of construction, and no nuclear material was present at the site during the IAEA’s most recent inspection. The agency added that, based on its initial assessment, the reported attack posed no radiological risk.

 

Without condemning the attack or naming those responsible, the IAEA said Director General Rafael Grossi had once again called for maximum military restraint in the vicinity of all nuclear-related facilities.

 

The agency also stated that it is in contact with Iranian authorities regarding the reported incident and will provide further updates as additional information becomes available.

 

Earlier, the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran issued a statement condemning what it described as a U.S. attack on the Darkhovin nuclear power plant construction site. According to the statement, the strike took place at approximately 3:39 a.m. local time on Sunday, July 19, 2026, involving multiple projectiles. The organization described the attack as an act of aggression and a violation of international law.
