WANA (Sep 26) – According to official data released by India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the country imported a crude oil shipment worth $111 million from Iran in June this year. This marks India’s first crude oil purchase from Iran since 2018, when imports were halted following the U.S. withdrawal from the JCPOA and Washington’s subsequent pressure on New Delhi.

In addition to crude oil, India imported around $94 million worth of petroleum products from Iran between January and the end of July 2025. Altogether, India’s imports of crude and petroleum products from Iran during the first seven months of this year totaled $205 million, accounting for 54 percent of Iran’s total exports to India over the same period.

Although it remains unclear whether New Delhi will officially resume large-scale imports of Iranian oil, recent developments suggest that India may be signaling a reduced willingness to comply with U.S. sanctions and a shift away from Washington’s policies.

Western media outlets, citing informed sources, have also reported that India is considering resuming oil imports from both Iran and Venezuela. According to these sources, Indian officials have asked Washington to allow imports from these countries as an alternative, should India reduce or halt its crude purchases from Russia.
