Iran and IAEA Chief Hold Technical Talks in Geneva Ahead of Indirect U.S. Negotiations
WANA (Feb 16) – Geneva has once again become a focal point of nuclear diplomacy as Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s Foreign Minister, met with Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), on the eve of a new round of indirect negotiations between Tehran and Washington.
Grossi visited the residence of the Iranian delegation in Geneva, where the two sides held what he described as “deep technical discussions” in preparation for the upcoming talks. “I concluded in-depth technical discussions with Iran’s Foreign Minister to prepare for the Geneva negotiations scheduled for tomorrow,” Grossi said, signaling that expert-level engagement is underway ahead of formal diplomatic exchanges.
According to official reports, members of Iran’s nuclear expert team were present during the meeting to address detailed technical issues. In the broader framework of the second round of negotiations, Iran’s delegation includes economic, legal, and technical specialists — a composition Iranian officials describe as evidence of a “result-oriented” approach.
The indirect talks between Iran and the United States are set to take place with mediation by Oman. In this context, Araghchi is also scheduled to meet with Badr Albusaidi, Oman’s Foreign Minister, who has facilitated communication between the two sides in previous rounds, including discussions held earlier in Muscat.
Ahead of the meetings, Araghchi wrote on the social platform X: “I have come to Geneva with genuine initiatives aimed at reaching a fair and balanced agreement. What is absolutely not on the agenda is surrendering to threats.”
He added that Iran is participating in the process with “prudence, courage, and seriousness,” and that a mutual understanding remains achievable if the United States demonstrates political readiness for a fair outcome.
The previous round of indirect talks, held in Muscat, was described by both sides as “constructive,” with an expressed willingness to continue the diplomatic track.
