Iran and Pakistan to Expand Trade, Political, and Security Cooperation
WANA (Nov 05) – Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, in the opening of his three-day official visit to Islamabad, said Tehran and Islamabad are moving toward strengthening trade, political, and security cooperation. He described the trip as an opportunity to follow up on previous agreements and discuss regional developments and issues concerning the Islamic world.
Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, arrived in Islamabad on Wednesday at the head of a parliamentary delegation. Upon arrival, he noted the wide-ranging commonalities between Iran and Pakistan, emphasizing that “the two neighboring countries, given the current regional context and the level of bilateral engagement—both between the National Assemblies and Senates as well as in economic cooperation—maintain active relations.”
Qalibaf added that the visit, conducted at the invitation of Pakistani officials, includes meetings with the heads and members of the National Assembly and Senate, as well as with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. “The main agenda of this trip,” he said, “is to pursue the expansion of trade, political, and security cooperation between the two countries.”
Highlighting the key themes of the visit, Qalibaf stated: “Bilateral relations, regional priorities, and key issues of the Islamic world will be discussed. Several previous agreements and understandings between Tehran and Islamabad, now in stages of implementation and completion, will also be reviewed.”
During the first day of his visit, Qalibaf met with the Speaker of Pakistan’s National Assembly, where both sides underscored the importance of strengthening parliamentary cooperation and expanding economic and security ties between the two nations.
Qalibaf is also scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and other senior Pakistani political and parliamentary figures during his three-day stay. The visit comes amid heightened regional dynamics along the eastern borders and renewed momentum in regional economic initiatives, emphasizing the need for closer coordination between Tehran and Islamabad.
