Iran and Russia Hold Talks on the Sidelines of SCO Summit
WANA (Jul 15) – On the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Council of Foreign Ministers meeting in Tianjin, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi met with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, for bilateral talks.
During the meeting, the two top diplomats reviewed Tehran-Moscow relations and discussed recent regional developments following military actions by the United States and Israel against Iran. They also followed up on key issues raised during Araghchi’s recent visit to Moscow and their previous meeting in Rio de Janeiro.
Araghchi strongly criticized the political climate created by the U.S. and some European nations against Iran in the aftermath of the military attacks.
He reaffirmed Iran’s firm resolve to defend its sovereignty and hold aggressors accountable, emphasizing the Iranian nation’s legitimate right to peaceful nuclear energy, including uranium enrichment.
The Iranian foreign minister further warned about the consequences of recent military actions, stating that they undermine the principles and objectives of the United Nations Charter, diplomacy, and the non-proliferation regime.
He called on the UN Security Council and all governments to fulfill their responsibilities in maintaining regional and global peace and security.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reiterated his country’s condemnation of the illegal attacks on Iran, particularly those targeting its peaceful nuclear facilities.
He emphasized the importance of continued bilateral and multilateral efforts to prevent further escalation and instability in the region. Lavrov also affirmed Russia’s readiness to assist in this regard, especially through international platforms such as the United Nations Security Council.
