WANA (Jul 01) – Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization has announced extensive flight restrictions in Tehran and Mashhad during the funeral ceremonies for the country’s Supreme Leader, with airspace over both cities scheduled to close completely on designated days.

 

According to the head of the Civil Aviation Organization, Tehran’s Mehrabad Airport will be closed from 5:00 a.m. on Friday to accommodate the arrival and departure of foreign delegations and diplomatic guests. Only diplomatic and official government flights will be permitted to operate from the airport during that period. Meanwhile, Imam Khomeini International Airport will continue operating its regular flight schedule without restrictions.

 

The aviation chief added that no operational restrictions will be in place at either Mehrabad or Imam Khomeini airports on Saturday and Sunday. However, on Monday, July 6, Tehran’s airspace will be completely closed as the main funeral procession takes place, resulting in the suspension of all flights at both airports.

 

He further stated that Mehrabad Airport will resume normal operations on Tuesday. Imam Khomeini International Airport, however, will remain closed that day to facilitate the transfer of the late Supreme Leader’s body to Iraq.

 

Authorities also announced that on July 9, coinciding with funeral ceremonies in the northeastern city of Mashhad, the city’s airspace and all surrounding airports will be fully closed, with no flights operating during the restrictions.

 

Separately, the chief executive of Iran’s national railway company announced a special transportation plan for mourners attending the ceremonies. Regular and additional train services have been scheduled on routes serving Tehran, Qom, and Mashhad.

 

Under the plan, extra trains to Tehran will operate on Monday and Tuesday, additional services to Qom on Tuesday and Wednesday, and extra trains to Mashhad on Tuesday and Wednesday. Special return services have also been scheduled from Thursday through Sunday to accommodate travelers returning from the ceremonies.
