Iran Asserts Readiness to Defend Against ‘Any Evil and Threats’
WANA (Apr 22) – Esmaeil Baghaei, spokesperson for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has reaffirmed Iran’s unwavering readiness to defend its national interests while addressing regional mediation efforts and the possibility of future diplomatic engagement.
Response to Pakistani Mediation Efforts
In response to inquiries regarding Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar’s call for a ceasefire extension between Iran and the United States, Baghaei expressed appreciation for Islamabad’s “good offices” and mediation efforts aimed at establishing regional peace.
However, he emphasized that Iran did not initiate the current conflict, describing it as a “hostile war” imposed upon the nation.
“Iran’s actions have been entirely within the framework of its inherent right to legitimate defense against the military aggression of the United States and the Zionist regime,” Baghaei stated.
He further noted that Iran is closely monitoring both field and political developments, asserting that the armed forces remain on high alert to deliver a “decisive and comprehensive defense” against any potential threats.
Accountability for Aggression
Addressing the legal and political repercussions of recent strikes against Iranian territory, the spokesperson clarified that Tehran is pursuing multiple avenues for accountability. Iran intends to utilize all available international capacities to:
- Hold aggressors accountable for war crimes.
- Seek reparations for damages incurred during U.S. and Israeli attacks.
- Ensure justice is served against the perpetrators and architects of these actions.
The Prospect of Diplomacy
When questioned about a potential new round of negotiations with the United States, Baghaei maintained a pragmatic stance, describing diplomacy as a strategic tool rather than an end in itself.
“Diplomacy is a means to secure national interests and security,” he remarked. “We will act whenever we conclude that the necessary and logical grounds are prepared to use this tool to realize the national interest and consolidate the achievements of the Iranian nation.”
He concluded by stating that any future engagement would be contingent on its ability to thwart the “sinister goals” of Iran’s adversaries.
