WANA (Sep 07) – Iran’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva has called for accountability for those responsible for what it described as the US-Israeli war against Iran, stressing the UN Human Rights Council’s responsibility to address attacks on civilians and pursue the rights of victims.

In a message posted on X on Monday, the Iranian mission said that with the opening of the 63rd session of the UN Human Rights Council, Tehran was once again reaffirming its commitment to amplifying the voices of victims and survivors of what it described as US and Israeli aggression.

The mission said the council had an established mandate to address violations of human rights and international humanitarian law resulting from conflicts, including what it characterized as deliberate and indiscriminate attacks on civilian infrastructure and targets in Iran.

Iran Highlights Minab and Lamerd Attacks

The Iranian mission specifically referred to attacks on Minab and Lamerd, describing them as clear war crimes. It said Tehran would continue seeking accountability and justice while working to protect civilians and defend the rights of victims and survivors.

Human Rights Council Begins 63rd Session

The statement came as the 63rd session of the UN Human Rights Council opened at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. According to the official schedule, the month-long session began on September 7 under the presidency of Indonesia’s Sidharto Reza Suryodipuro.

The opening programme includes an oral report by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk on the global human rights situation. The session will also address country and thematic reports, discussions with special rapporteurs and investigative mechanisms, and draft resolutions.

Council’s Role in Addressing Rights Violations

The UN Human Rights Council is an intergovernmental body made up of 47 member states and was established by the UN General Assembly in 2006. Its responsibilities include addressing human rights violations and making recommendations concerning them.

Iran’s latest appeal focuses on using this mandate to investigate attacks against Iranian civilians and pursue justice and rights for victims and survivors.
