Iran Calls on ICRC to Condemn U.S. and Israel Attacks on Civilians
WANA (Mar 03) – Iran’s Ambassador to Geneva, Ali Bahreini, in an official letter to Mirjana Spoljaric, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), condemned recent military actions by the United States and Israel against Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In his letter, Bahreini stated that on February 28, the U.S. and Israel carried out premeditated aggressive actions against Iran, violating Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter and the prohibition on the use of force.
He condemned the attacks on civilian targets, including hospitals, medical centers, and schools, which resulted in tragic casualties. Specifically, he noted that an elementary school in Minab, Hormozgan province, was attacked, killing over 160 young girls and injuring many others.
Bahreini argued that such actions violate the Geneva Conventions of 1949 and its Additional Protocols, breaching fundamental principles of distinction and proportionality under international humanitarian law.
He reaffirmed that Iran has never been the aggressor and remains committed to diplomacy and humanitarian law, but will exercise its inherent right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter.
The Ambassador called on the ICRC to unequivocally condemn these violations and take action within its mandate to protect civilians and protected objects.
