WANA (Sep 25) – Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, said that Tehran, Beijing, and Moscow have agreed to take coordinated action against what he described as the “illegal attempts” of three European countries to reinstate UN sanctions on Iran.

Gharibabadi, who is in New York alongside Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi for the 80th UN General Assembly, held a joint meeting on Wednesday with the ambassadors of China and Russia at the UN.

“In the joint session with the Chinese and Russian ambassadors, we discussed UN Security Council Resolution 2231 and the next joint steps,” Gharibabadi stated. “We agreed on coordinated action against the unlawful efforts of Germany, France, and the UK to bring back sanctions that had been lifted.”

On August 28, the three European countries formally triggered the process for activating the snapback mechanism by sending a letter to the Security Council, aiming to restore UN sanctions that were lifted under the JCPOA. With only days left before the expired resolutions are reimposed, tensions have escalated in New York.

A day earlier, on September 24, a separate meeting took place between Araghchi, the foreign ministers of the three European states, and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.

According to the Irish Foreign Ministry, that session addressed what Iran called the “unjustified and unlawful” move by Europe and included the presentation of ideas and proposals to keep diplomatic channels open. Consultations with all parties are expected to continue.
