Iran Condemns Attack on “Sumoud 2” Flotilla
WANA (May 01) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson has strongly condemned Israel’s reported attack on vessels belonging to the humanitarian flotilla “Sumoud 2” in international waters and the detention of pro-Palestinian activists, describing the incident as an act of “piracy” and “terrorism.”
According to official statements, Esmail Baghaei said the “Sumoud” campaign was formed with the participation of supporters from dozens of countries, aiming to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza and challenge the blockade on the territory. He stressed that targeting the flotilla was not merely an attack on a relief mission, but, in his words, “a blow to human conscience and shared global values.”
Baghaei also referred to the condition of those detained, stating that they had been transferred to Ketziot prison, a facility often cited in reports concerning the treatment of Palestinian detainees. He added that the transfer was accompanied by what he described as “humiliating and inhumane behavior,” calling it further evidence of serious violations of basic human principles.
The spokesperson urged the international community, the United Nations, and governments worldwide to respond to what he characterized as repeated breaches of international law. He called for immediate action to secure the release of those detained and to support humanitarian initiatives aimed at assisting civilians in Gaza.
He concluded by emphasizing the need to hold Israel accountable for the incident and to ensure continued international efforts to deliver humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza.
