Iran Condemns Attacks on Civilians in Sudan
WANA (Oct 29) – Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei voiced concern over the ongoing armed clashes in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, Sudan, condemning the destruction of infrastructure and the killing of innocent civilians in the city.
Baghaei warned against what he described as dangerous moves aimed at re-dividing Sudan, stressing the need to respect the country’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Armed conflict in Sudan erupted on April 15, 2023, between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), commanded by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti.
The clashes stemmed from a power struggle and disputes over integrating the RSF into the national army following the 2021 military coup.
Despite multiple international mediation efforts, no lasting ceasefire has been achieved. Since gaining independence in 1956, Sudan has faced decades of turmoil, including 20 coup attempts and two devastating civil wars — from 1955 to 1972 and 1983 to 2005 — which ultimately led to the secession of South Sudan in 2011.
