Iran Condemns Illegal U.S. Actions Against Venezuela
WANA (Dec 17) – Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a statement strongly condemning the threatening remarks and actions of the United States against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, including threats of a naval blockade and attempts to obstruct the country’s lawful oil exports.
The statement emphasizes that such positions and actions are a clear manifestation of a policy based on the use of force and systematic bullying, constituting a flagrant violation of established principles and rules of international law and the United Nations Charter, including freedom of navigation, maritime security, and the free flow of international trade.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry described any U.S. action involving harassment, seizure, or obstruction of commercial vessels traveling to or from Venezuela as a blatant example of “state piracy” and armed robbery at sea, stressing that references to U.S. domestic laws or its unilateral and illegal sanctions cannot, under any circumstances, legitimize such criminal acts.
The statement further notes that threats, economic siege, and the use of force against an independent country and a member of the United Nations represent a clear breach of the core principles of the UN Charter, particularly respect for national sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the prohibition of the threat or use of force. In this context, no power has the right to interfere in Venezuela’s internal affairs, and under international law, Venezuela possesses the inherent right to defend itself against any external threat or aggression.
Iran also warned that the continuation of Washington’s confrontational unilateralism against sovereign states, if met with inaction by the international community and the United Nations, would set a dangerous precedent and normalize lawlessness in international relations, with serious consequences for global peace and security.
In conclusion, the Islamic Republic of Iran called on the United Nations, the Non-Aligned Movement, and all responsible governments and relevant international institutions to recognize the gravity of the current situation, condemn the United States’ illegal and coercive actions, and hold the U.S. government accountable for its blatant violations of international law and the UN Charter.
