Iran Condemns U.S. Interventions and Sanctions Against Cuba
WANA (May 23) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran has issued a statement strongly condemning the continuous interference of the U.S. government in Cuba’s internal affairs, slamming Washington’s illegal sanctions, provocative actions, political pressures, and military threats against the island nation.
According to the official statement, the U.S. economic and trade embargoes imposed on Cuba since 1960 following the Cuban Revolution constitute a direct assault on Cuba’s national sovereignty and the fundamental principles of the UN Charter—particularly the right to self-determination.
The ministry highlighted that these measures have led to gross violations of the human rights of the Cuban people and inflicted widespread economic damage.
The statement continued: “The illegal and inhumane U.S. sanctions against Cuba over the past 66 years—which stand as the longest-running sanctions regime against any nation—amount to a crime against humanity due to their sweeping impact on the human rights of the Cuban population. The U.S. government must be held accountable for committing these crimes.”
The ministry also pointed to recent escalations, noting that Washington’s moves in recent months to tighten sanctions and enforce a naval blockade against Cuba, coupled with “provocative and baseless allegations,” are aimed at intimidating and blackmailing the Cuban government.
Tehran characterized these actions as yet another example of U.S. lawlessness and bullying that deserves universal condemnation by all nations and the United Nations.
Concluding the statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the will of nations to protect their independence and national dignity cannot be broken by sanctions and threats.
Expressing full solidarity with the government and people of Cuba, Iran reiterated the urgent need to respect national sovereignty, uphold the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states, and bring an immediate end to unilateral coercive measures against developing countries.
