Iran Condemns U.S. Threat of Force Against Venezuela
WANA (Aug 21) – The Iranian Foreign Ministry has condemned U.S. threats to use force against Venezuela, warning of the dangerous consequences such actions could have for peace and security in the Caribbean region.
In a statement, the ministry denounced Washington’s threats against Venezuela’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity, describing them as a continuation of U.S. “interventionist and unlawful policies” toward the Venezuelan people.
“These actions by the United States constitute a gross violation of the United Nations Charter, particularly Article 2(4), which prohibits the use or threat of force against independent states,” the statement read. “They also reflect the growing disregard of the U.S. administration for the fundamental principles of international law.”
Reaffirming its support for Caracas, Tehran emphasized the UN Charter’s principles of respect for national sovereignty, the right of nations to self-determination, and the prohibition of force against independent states.
The statement declared Iran’s solidarity with the Venezuelan people and government, and called on the UN Security Council and Secretary-General to address the “potentially dangerous situation threatening peace in the Caribbean.”
The statement followed media reports citing two informed sources who said that the United States planned to deploy three Aegis-equipped guided-missile destroyers to Venezuelan waters within 36 hours to confront what Washington described as “the threat of drug cartels.”
According to another U.S. official quoted by the media, the operation would also involve the deployment of 4,000 sailors and Marines to the southern Caribbean, along with several P-8 surveillance aircraft, warships, and at least one attack submarine.
