WANA (Mar 01) – In the early hours of Sunday, the Government of Iran announced 40 days of national mourning and seven days of public holidays across the country following the martyrdom of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution.

Ayatollah Khamenei was assassinated in a Saturday morning attack carried out by the Israeli regime and the United States, according to official statements.

The Cabinet’s statement reads as follows:

In the Name of God, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful

“Those who commit injustice will soon know to what end they will return.”

Honourable and proud people of Iran,

With deep sorrow and regret, we announce that following the brutal attack by the criminal government of the United States and the accursed Zionist regime, the exemplar of faith, jihad, and resistance—the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Grand Ayatollah Imam Khamenei—attained the great honour of martyrdom.

The righteous successor of Imam Khomeini, who for more than 37 years bore the banner of true leadership of the Islamic front with wisdom and courage, opened a new chapter in the history of Islamic governance through his steadfast faith and exemplary bravery, and until the final moment of his blessed and historic life, guided the Islamic Ummah in the face of arrogance and oppression.

The exalted martyr, Grand Ayatollah Imam Khamenei—an icon of sacrifice and resistance in the contemporary era, known as the “Imam of True Promises” and the “Imam of Hope and Dignity”—will forever remain in the hearts of free people, the oppressed, and the fighters for justice around the world, alongside the great name of Imam Khomeini. His comprehensive knowledge, wisdom, foresight, pure faith, sincerity, iron will, courage, deep religious scholarship, and trust in Almighty God were among the outstanding qualities rarely found in political leaders.

The Cabinet of the Islamic Republic of Iran extends its condolences to the Imam of the Age, the noble people of Iran, the great Islamic Ummah, and all freedom-loving people of the world. In solidarity with the resilient Iranian nation, it hereby declares 40 days of national mourning and seven days of public holidays.

This great crime will never go unanswered and will mark a new chapter in the history of the Islamic world and Shi‘ism. The pure blood of this noble Sayyid will surge forth like a powerful spring and uproot American–Zionist oppression and crimes. Once again, with full strength and resolve, and relying on the support of the Islamic Ummah and the free people of the world, we will make the perpetrators and masterminds of this crime regret their actions.

Our beloved Iran, with divine assistance, united and steadfast, will pass through this difficult trial with honor, for God lies in wait for the unjust enemies and is the helper of the faithful and the oppressed.
