Iran Defends Airstrike on U.S. Base in Qatar, Denies Threat to Qatari Sovereignty
WANA (Jun 25) – Iran’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations stated that the recent Iranian strike on the U.S. military base at Al-Udeid in Qatar posed no threat whatsoever to the Qatari government or its people.
In a letter addressed to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the President of the UN Security Council, Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani emphasized that the strike was a defensive measure in response to what Iran considers unlawful U.S. aggression. The letter referenced a June 21, 2025 communication (S/2025/404) detailing unprovoked U.S. airstrikes against Iran’s peaceful, safeguarded nuclear facilities in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan — an attack for which the U.S. President publicly claimed responsibility the same day.
“In exercise of its inherent right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter,” Iravani wrote, “and in response to the U.S. act of aggression — a clear armed attack and violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Islamic Republic of Iran — the Iranian Armed Forces, on June 23, 2025, carried out a lawful, proportionate, and defensive strike targeting the U.S. airbase in Al-Udeid, Qatar, in full accordance with international law and international humanitarian law.”
He underlined that the Iranian operation was carefully planned to avoid civilian harm: “The targeted base is located at a considerable distance from urban and residential areas, and all necessary precautions were taken to prevent collateral damage.”
The Iranian envoy strongly emphasized that the action posed no threat to Qatar. “The Islamic Republic of Iran reiterates that this defensive and lawful action in no way constitutes a threat to the friendly and brotherly nation of Qatar or its esteemed government and people,” Iravani said, reaffirming Iran’s commitment to preserving and strengthening the long-standing friendly ties between the two nations.
