WANA (Jul 21) – The Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Vienna has issued a statement following a U.S. strike on the Karun nuclear power plant construction site in Darkhovin, urging the international community to adopt a “zero tolerance” policy toward attacks on peaceful, safeguarded nuclear facilities.

 

According to the statement, in the early hours of July 19, 2026, U.S. forces launched a series of missiles targeting the Karun site, which the mission described as a symbol of Iran’s scientific self-reliance. The mission noted that this incident marks the 18th wave of attacks directed at Iran’s civilian nuclear infrastructure since the outbreak of joint U.S.-Israeli military actions in June 2025.

 

The diplomatic body emphasized that such strikes violate international law and the fundamental prohibition against aggression, warning that the normalization of attacks on safeguarded nuclear installations poses a severe threat to global economic development and diminishes international confidence in peaceful nuclear technology.

 

Iran’s representation further highlighted ongoing communication with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). On July 19, 2026, the Vice President and head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran formally dispatched a letter to the IAEA Director General, calling for decisive action to protect the integrity of global non-proliferation standards.

 

The statement concluded by reiterating Iran’s resolve to take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and sovereign rights, while stressing that preventing attacks on peaceful nuclear facilities remains a collective global responsibility.
