Iran Denounces Assassination of Veteran Diplomat Kamal Kharrazi in Letter to UN
WANA (Apr 11) – Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, has formally addressed the UN Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council regarding the death of Kamal Kharrazi.
In the letter, Iravani characterized the assassination as a “deliberate pattern of criminal behavior” aimed at silencing advocates of peaceful engagement.
Fatal Injuries Following Targeted Strike
The letter confirms that Dr. Kamal Kharrazi passed away on April 9, 2026, due to severe injuries sustained during an Israeli military operation. On April 1, 2026, a strike targeted his private residence in Tehran, which resulted in critical injuries to the former diplomat and the death of his wife.
The Iranian mission described the attack as a “calculated act of state terrorism” against a civilian residence and a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and the fundamental right to life.
A Legacy of Diplomacy
Kharrazi was a prominent figure in Iranian and international politics, having served in several high-ranking roles:
- Minister of Foreign Affairs (1997–2005)
- Permanent Representative to the UN (1989–1997)
- Academic and Peace Advocate: A university professor and regular participant in the “Leaders for Peace” conference in Paris.
The letter emphasized that throughout his career, Kharrazi remained steadfastly committed to multilateralism, the UN Charter, and the peaceful resolution of disputes as the cornerstone of international security.
Allegations of Systematic Targeting
Ambassador Iravani stated that the assassination is not merely an unlawful deprivation of life but an “attack on diplomacy itself.” The letter argues that the Israeli administration views any regional or international voice calling for dialogue as a threat to its destabilizing objectives.
“This act demonstrates a deliberate pattern of criminal conduct intended to silence proponents of peaceful interaction and systematically undermine diplomatic channels,” the letter stated.
Accountability and International Law
Iran has condemned the act “in the strongest possible terms,” alleging that the operation was carried out with the complicity and support of the United States.
Tehran maintains that this incident is part of a broader “systematic campaign” against Iranian civilians and senior officials that escalated on February 28, 2026.
The correspondence concludes by asserting that both Israel and the United States bear “full international legal responsibility” for the act.
Ambassador Iravani requested that the letter be circulated as an official document of the UN Security Council.
