WANA (Jul 21) – The spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced a new round of talks with the European troika to the JCPOA, clarifying that these discussions will be held separately from Iran’s indirect negotiations with the United States.

Esmail Baghaei, spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, confirmed that Iran has agreed to a new round of negotiations with European countries.

“In response to a request by European troika , Iran has agreed to hold a new round of talks with representatives of the three European signatories to the JCPOA,” Baghaei said.

He added that the talks will take place on Friday in Istanbul at the deputy foreign minister level, with Majid Takht-Ravanchi and Kazem Gharibabadi representing Iran. The focus of the discussions will be Iran’s nuclear program.

Baghaei also noted that under the current (14th) Iranian administration, four rounds of negotiations have already been held with the European trio — France, the UK, and Germany — in New York, Geneva (twice), and Istanbul.

Regarding Iran-U.S. contacts, he emphasized: “Talks with the Europeans are being conducted separately from Iran’s indirect negotiations with the United States.”

Previously, it had been reported that Iran was considering a European request to resume negotiations on the nuclear issue and sanctions relief.

On Thursday, July 17, the foreign ministers of the UK, France, and Germany, along with the EU foreign policy representative, held talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, urging Iran to immediately return to nuclear negotiations. They warned that unless “tangible progress” is made by the end of summer, all international sanctions against Iran would be reinstated.

This was the first contact between European officials and Iran following the massive airstrikes by Israel and the United States on Iran in mid-June. France’s foreign ministry confirmed that the E3 ministers conveyed their determination to trigger the snapback mechanism during the call with Tehran.
