Iran Elected Vice Chair of UN Social Development Commission
WANA (Feb 13) – The Islamic Republic of Iran has been elected as Vice Chair of the next session of the United Nations Commission for Social Development for a one-year term during the 64th session of the commission.
The Commission for Social Development, one of the eight functional commissions of the UN Economic and Social Council, comprises 46 member states and serves as a think tank and advisory body on issues such as poverty eradication, full and decent employment, and the promotion of social equality and justice.
Members are elected for four-year terms with a balanced geographic representation from different regions of the world. Iran will remain a member of the commission until the end of 2028.
Iran’s delegation played an active role in the 64th session, highlighting national achievements in human development and citing UN-published indicators and reports.
The 64th session of the UN Social Development Commission was held from February 2 to 10, 2026, at the UN headquarters in New York, focusing primarily on operationalizing new global commitments in the field of social justice.
