Iran Envoy Warns of Naval Blockade’s Human Rights Impact
WANA (May 22) – The Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations in Geneva has sent an official letter to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, demanding urgent attention to the severe human rights implications of the US naval blockade against Iranian ports.
In the letter, Iranian envoy Ali Bahreini highlighted the fallout of these unlawful measures on the humanitarian situation of the Iranian people. He emphasized that the “unilateral naval blockade,” implemented within the framework of ongoing unilateral coercive measures and continuous pressure against Iran, has already had widespread human rights consequences.
Bahreini warned that if the blockade continues, it will severely threaten the fundamental rights of the Iranian population, including the right to development, access to essential goods and services, the right to health, and access to medical equipment.
‘A Direct Violation of International Law’
The Iranian diplomat further stressed that the maritime blockade directly violates the principles of international law and is entirely illegal. Due to its severe impact on civilians—specifically through the deprivation of food and essential goods—Bahreini stated that the blockade constitutes a war crime.
Call for Official Monitoring
The ambassador formally requested that the High Commissioner for Human Rights review and monitor the consequences of this illegal naval blockade, focusing on its impact on:
- The right to health and access to medical supplies and services.
- Food security and access to essential goods.
- The livelihoods and economic well-being of the population in southern Iran.
“The current situation in the region is the result of the blatant and illegal aggression of the United States and Israel against the Islamic Republic,” Bahreini concluded in the letter, asserting that both entities remain fully responsible for the consequences of their anti-humanitarian actions.
