Iran Envoy’s Letter to Denmark on Evin Prison Strike
WANA (Jul 17) – Iran’s Ambassador to Denmark, Sajadi, has issued a formal letter to the Danish Minister of Justice, denouncing the Israeli airstrikes on Tehran’s Evin Prison that killed dozens of inmates, staff, and visiting civilians during the recent 12-day conflict.
In the letter, Ambassador Sajadi sharply criticized what he called the “deafening silence” of the international legal community in response to Israel’s attack, which he described as a “deliberate and calculated assault on civilian infrastructure.”
According to the letter, two missile strikes hit Evin Prison on Monday, June 23, 2025, during regular working hours and visiting time — a period when the facility was crowded with detainees’ families, legal representatives, and administrative staff.
The ambassador emphasized that the timing and targets clearly reflected Israel’s intent to cause maximum civilian casualties, calling the attack part of Israel’s broader pattern of “systematic violence,” as witnessed in Gaza and elsewhere.
Sajadi listed several parts of the prison complex that were destroyed or heavily damaged, including:
- The main prison entrance and perimeter walls
- Administrative offices and prosecution departments
- The women’s ward and prison clinic
- Visitation halls and the library building
- Civilian homes near the facility

He described the strike as “indiscriminate and criminal,” stating it resulted in 79 deaths, including prison staff, guards, detainees, visiting family members, and residents from nearby neighborhoods. Dozens more were wounded.
Sajadi noted that the Israeli Minister of Defense openly claimed responsibility for the attack, an admission he called “a shocking confirmation of prior planning and Israel’s sense of impunity on the international stage.”
While condemning the strike, he welcomed international reactions from human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, which declared that “deliberate attacks on civilian targets are prohibited under international humanitarian law and constitute war crimes.” The UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) also condemned the incident, labeling it a “serious violation of international humanitarian law.”
Concluding his letter, the ambassador reiterated the moral and legal duty of the global judicial community to condemn attacks on prisons and civilian lives, warning that ongoing silence would speak volumes about global complicity.
