Iran Executes Man Convicted of Spying for CIA and Mossad
WANA (May 11) – Iran has executed Erfan Shakourzadeh, a man convicted of cooperating with the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and Israel’s intelligence service Mossad, according to Iranian judicial authorities.
Based on details released in the case file, Shakourzadeh had been recruited into a scientific organization involved in satellite-related activities due to his professional expertise. Authorities said he later established contact with foreign intelligence services and transferred classified information related to his work.
Iranian officials stated that his contacts with foreign agencies took place in three stages — the first and third involving Mossad, and the second involving the CIA.
According to the judiciary, he knowingly shared sensitive organizational information with foreign operatives.
Investigators said Shakourzadeh initially contacted Mossad by completing an online cooperation form and exchanging emails that included personal details, workplace information, access levels, and descriptions of his organizational duties.
Later, an individual posing as an Iranian living in Canada reportedly approached him through LinkedIn. Iranian authorities claimed the individual was in fact a Mossad officer who offered him participation in overseas dollar-funded projects.
The communication allegedly continued through WhatsApp and Google-based communication platforms. Authorities said Shakourzadeh shared information about satellite projects and company operations in exchange for cryptocurrency payments.
According to court documents, Shakourzadeh later attempted to establish direct contact with the CIA by submitting his personal and professional information through the agency’s website. Iranian officials said he requested assistance obtaining a U.S. visa and opportunities to study in the United States.
In statements cited in the case file, Shakourzadeh reportedly told CIA contacts that he wanted “an American passport and money.”
Iranian authorities also alleged that he resumed cooperation with Mossad while still communicating with the CIA. The case documents mention operatives identified as “RON” and “Alex” as his alleged handlers.
Officials said the information transferred included employee identities and contact details, project information, organizational structures, and methods for gathering internal documents and data. The file also referred to efforts to create anonymous communication channels, including foreign phone numbers and newly created email accounts.
According to Iranian authorities, Shakourzadeh later informed his Mossad contact that he had been summoned for a security-related interview before his arrest and prosecution.
