WANA (Jan 26) – The Iranian national judo team finished third overall at the African Judo Cup after winning one gold medal and securing one fifth-place finish. Iran competed in the tournament with six judokas.

 

The final bouts of the African Judo Cup, hosted by Casablanca, Morocco, were held on Sunday evening, January 25, where Elias Parhizgar captured the championship title.

 

Competing in the men’s under-81 kg category in Pool A, Parhizgar began his campaign with a victory over Emmanuel Kossan Konin Junior of Côte d’Ivoire. He then defeated Ivan Ferreira of Argentina, followed by a win against Mika van Snijders of the Netherlands in his third match.

 

In the quarterfinals, Parhizgar faced Mustafa Habib of Bosnia and Herzegovina and advanced to the semifinals with a convincing win. He continued his strong performance by defeating Canada’s Olivier Gagnon by ippon in the semifinals to reach the final.

 

In the final bout, Parhizgar stepped onto the tatami against Antonio Candero of Angola and secured a technical knockout in less than one minute, earning the gold medal and the championship title of the African Judo Cup.

 

The African Judo Cup began on January 23 in Casablanca with the participation of 325 judokas from 42 countries and concluded on Sunday, January 25.

 

Russia topped the medal table with five gold, three silver, and four bronze medals. Host nation Morocco finished second with one gold, one silver, and one bronze medal, while Iran claimed third place with one gold medal and one fifth-place finish.

 

The Iranian team competed under the leadership of head coach Rashad Mammadov and coach Ayoub Rostami, with Elias Parhizgar’s gold medal standing out as the team’s highlight of the competition.
