WANA (Dec 17) – Iran has formally invited the Taliban’s foreign minister to visit Tehran following Afghanistan’s absence from a recent meeting of special envoys of Afghanistan’s neighboring countries held in the Iranian capital.

Amir Khan Muttaqi, the foreign minister of the Islamic Emirate, met with Iran’s special representative for Afghanistan in Kabul and received an official invitation to travel to Iran.

During the meeting, Mohammad Reza Bahrami, head of the Asian Affairs Department at Iran’s Foreign Ministry, conveyed Tehran’s invitation to the Taliban foreign minister and underscored the importance of relations with Kabul. He also called for Afghanistan to play an active role in regional cooperation.

For his part, Muttaqi said Afghanistan has moved beyond the difficult conditions of the past and should no longer be viewed as a “problem.” He stressed that Afghanistan’s foreign policy is based on expanding active, cooperation-based relations with countries in the region.

Both sides emphasized the expansion of bilateral interactions and the strengthening of regional cooperation.
