Iran Joins Executive Board of UNESCO Global Geoparks
WANA (Sep 14) – Qeshm Global Geopark has announced that Alireza Omri-Kazemi has been selected as Iran’s first representative on the Executive Board of UNESCO’s Global Geoparks Network.
Ebrahim Rostam-Gourani, director of Qeshm Global Geopark, said the appointment took place during the Fifth General Assembly of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network, held alongside the 11th International Geoparks Conference at Cotala Curay Geopark in Chile. The assembly included representatives from more than 230 geoparks across 50 countries, and 15 members were elected to the Executive Board.
The board, as the primary decision-making body, will be responsible for setting policies, developing strategies, and overseeing the overall management of the Global Geoparks Network for the next four years.
Rostam-Gourani emphasized the significance of the appointment, noting that it marks the first time Iran has been represented in the network’s top management.
He said the role allows Iran to participate directly in international decision-making and planning for new geoparks, as well as providing opportunities for scientific exchange and sharing experiences with other geoparks in the network.
He added that the position offers a valuable platform for knowledge transfer, enhancing global collaborations, and advocating for the interests of regional countries, particularly Iran, in sustainable development and geotourism.
Rostam-Gourani concluded that this achievement could help raise the profile of Qeshm Global Geopark, expand international cooperation, and increase Iran’s participation in UNESCO’s global projects.
