Iran Joins Top 10 in Human Heart Valve Production
WANA (Jul 28) – Iran has joined the ranks of the world’s top 10 countries in producing human heart valves using advanced tissue engineering technology. This significant achievement was made possible by the specialists at the Research Center and Transplant Products Bank of Tehran University of Medical Sciences.
According to officials from the center, the valves produced include both aortic and pulmonary types, processed under sterile conditions and in clean rooms that meet the highest international standards. This technology has not only dramatically reduced waiting times for transplant patients but also saved the country millions of dollars in foreign currency.
Imported versions of these valves typically cost between $6,000 and $12,000, while the Iranian-made valves are available to patients for less than 100 million rials (approximately $200). So far, over 1,000 heart valves have been produced at the center, and more than 100 patients undergo valve transplants using these products each year.

The production of heart valves from human tissue is considered a strategic and exclusive technology globally, accessible to only a handful of countries. The center has so far developed more than 295 knowledge-based products.
With this breakthrough, Iran has taken a major step forward in the field of advanced medical equipment and successfully addressed a critical healthcare gap using homegrown expertise and local innovation.
