Iran Judiciary Spokesperson Responds to “U.S. Piracy”
WANA (May 14) – The spokesperson for Iran’s Judiciary said the seizure of violating American oil tankers by the Islamic Republic of Iran was carried out in accordance with domestic and international law, defending the legal and judicial process behind the actions.
In a statement published on social media, the spokesperson accused the United States of engaging in “maritime piracy” against Iranian vessels and stressed that the confiscation of American tankers was based on final rulings issued by competent Iranian courts after legal procedures had been fully completed.
He added that documents and evidence related to the alleged violations committed by the seized tankers are also formally communicated to the U.S. side. According to the spokesperson, under the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, coastal states have the authority to detain foreign vessels that violate domestic or international regulations within their maritime zones or even on the high seas.
The Judiciary spokesperson further argued that Iran’s actions are not comparable to what he described as Washington’s “hostile and plundering behavior” against Iranian ships in recent years. He claimed that the U.S. president had openly acknowledged and even boasted about such actions.
He also criticized the United Nations for remaining silent in the face of what he called repeated American violations, warning that continued inaction would undermine the credibility and legitimacy of international institutions and global legal norms.
