WANA (Dec 11) – Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Iran–Kazakhstan trade has grown by 40 percent, but noted that the two countries have “far greater capacity” to expand economic ties.

He announced that a bilateral trade roadmap aimed at raising trade volume to $3 billion has been finalized and is ready for implementation, adding that both sides should make greater use of private-sector potential.

Speaking in a bilateral meeting with Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Pezeshkian thanked him for his hospitality and highlighted the deep cultural ties between the two nations, rooted in centuries of interaction along the historic Silk Road—ties he said continue to support the expansion of bilateral relations.

Pezeshkian stressed that Iran has maintained friendly relations with Kazakhstan since its independence and reiterated that strengthening ties with neighboring states—especially Muslim-majority countries—is a priority emphasized by Iran’s Supreme Leader.

He noted strong convergence between Tehran and Astana on regional and international issues, saying the two sides have achieved valuable agreements across political, economic and cultural fields.

He also welcomed active cooperation within multilateral platforms, including the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, the Eurasian Economic Union, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and the Caspian Sea framework.

Addressing current regional and global conditions, Pezeshkian said the region is facing “a complex situation” and criticized what he called unilateralism by the United States and some Western countries. Under such circumstances, he said, Iran and Kazakhstan must work with greater focus to deepen bilateral relations.

Highlighting the 40 percent rise in trade, the president noted that banking connectivity remains a key obstacle and called for resolving financial-channel issues.

He added that full implementation of the free trade agreement between Iran and the Eurasian Economic Union would significantly enhance economic cooperation between Tehran and Astana, urging all relevant agencies to ensure its effective execution.

During this trip, Senior officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran and Kazakhstan signed and exchanged seven bilateral documents and memorandums of cooperation aimed at enhancing the level of relations between the two countries.
