WANA (Sep 06) – The CEO of Royan Cord Blood Bank has announced that Iran has begun treating patients with severe arthritis using umbilical cord stem cells, with initial results described as highly successful.

According to Morteza Zarrabi, treatment for patients suffering from severe arthritis in the knee, hip, and shoulder joints started last week, and preliminary research results have been very promising.

He explained that two types of stem cells exist in cord blood and tissue: hematopoietic stem cells, mainly used for blood-related diseases, and mesenchymal stem cells, which can be applied to non-blood diseases such as neurological and bone disorders.

Zarrabi also revealed that the first mesenchymal stem cell product, named “Vartocell,” was developed in collaboration with CellTech Pharmed Company. This product has now reached the stage where it can be used for treating arthritis patients.

He emphasized that the goal is to expand the use of cord blood and tissue stem cells to treat various diseases, with initial results proving highly successful.
