Iran Lawmaker: Continued Membership in NPT Is Meaningless; Time to Withdraw
WANA (Mar 27) – The spokesperson for Iran’s Parliament National Security Commission, Ebrahim Rezaei, stated that Iran’s continued membership in the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) is meaningless and has brought no benefit to the country.
He said the NPT has not only failed to protect Iran from attacks by nuclear powers, but the country’s nuclear facilities have been repeatedly targeted, and international documents and agreements have essentially been ignored altogether.
He emphasized that Iran has no intention of producing a nuclear bomb and that its policy in this regard remains unchanged.
However, when the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency says that the only way to eliminate Iran’s nuclear program is through an atomic bomb, this is provocative and dangerous.
He added that the United States has withdrawn from 60 international organizations and conventions, and now if Iran decides to leave the NPT, it will likely be met with surprise and opposition from the West—“it is time to withdraw.”
