WANA (Sep 01) – Today, Tehran hosts one of the largest architectural and commercial projects in the world: Iran Mall. Covering nearly 1.9 million square meters, it holds the title of the world’s largest shopping center. This massive complex not only surpasses Dubai Mall, which spans 1.1 million square meters, but is also larger than many well-known shopping centers in China and the United States.

A Symbol of Modern Architecture in Iran

The construction of Iran Mall, located in western Tehran, responds to a long-felt gap in the country: the absence of a modern, fully equipped, international-standard shopping center capable of meeting the needs of a multi-million population and a sprawling capital. For years, many Iranians traveling abroad, especially to Dubai, spoke of the grandeur and luxury of its large malls.

For years, many Iranians who traveled abroad, especially to Dubai, spoke of the large and luxurious malls there. Now, Iran Mall has provided this experience within the country and has addressed part of the need for national pride and well-being.

Construction of the Iran Mall project began in 2011, and its first phase was put into operation in 2018. This project was designed and executed in two phases, with the goal of creating a commercial, cultural, and recreational center inspired by authentic Iranian architecture alongside modern global technology.

Beyond Shopping: A Multifaceted Experience

Iran Mall is not merely a shopping center; this project, with a combination of commercial, cultural, sports, and recreational spaces, presents a model similar to global examples.

The presence of a massive library with classical design, cinemas, art spaces, and even an Iranian garden within the complex, as well as an ice rink and games such as billiards and bowling, has turned it into a tourism and cultural destination.

Many influencers and foreign tourists on YouTube and social media have expressed amazement at the grandeur and design quality of this complex. Their videos, receiving positive feedback from global users, have made Iran Mall one of Iran’s new faces in the tourism sector.

Voices of Support: An Opportunity for Economy and Tourism

Supporters of the project believe that Iran Mall can be a turning point for Iran’s tourism economy. Creating thousands of direct and indirect job opportunities, attracting new investments, and strengthening the tourism industry are among its cited benefits. For many, this complex is considered a showcase of Iranian architectural and managerial capabilities in executing large-scale projects.

Critiques and Concerns

Of course, this project has not been free of criticism. Critics argue that in circumstances where part of society is struggling with economic and livelihood issues, spending huge amounts on building such a massive mall is not the right priority.

Some criticisms have also been raised regarding the financing and management of the project, which have so far remained at the media and expert level and have not reached the judicial stage.

Furthermore, one common critique of Iran Mall is the high price level in some stores. Many of the items available are expensive, preventing ordinary people from being able to purchase in all sections.

This has created the perception that the mall is designed more to attract foreign tourists and the affluent domestic class than to serve the everyday consumption needs of the general public.

On the other hand, due to sanctions and the absence of international brands, many products are made in Iran, which is a positive point. However, some products labeled as foreign brands are actually domestically produced and only carry a foreign brand label, which makes their exorbitant prices illogical.

Balancing Perspectives

However, even critics acknowledge that the existence of such a complex in Iran is an exceptional phenomenon; a phenomenon that can both help boost the country’s tourism in the future and contribute to the development of urban infrastructure. Although prices in some sections are high and beyond the reach of many people, its public, cultural, and recreational facilities remain accessible to a wide range of visitors.

Overall, what stands out most about Iran Mall is the combination of admiration and criticism. Although part of society questions the costs and necessity of such a project, the presence of this complex in Tehran, both from a welfare perspective and in terms of international standing, presents a new image of Iranian capabilities in executing large-scale projects. Today, Iran Mall is not only a place for shopping but also a symbol of modern urban aspirations in Iran.
