Iran Proposes Independent Financial Corridor For BRICS
WANA (Aug 13) – The Governor of the Central Bank of Iran (CBI) has called for the establishment of a dedicated BRICS financial corridor and the integration of national payment networks among member nations during the second day of BRICS financial meetings in India.
Speaking at the summit, Abdolnaser Hemmati emphasized that financial cooperation within the bloc must move beyond general discussions to build operational, secure, and sustainable infrastructure for cross-border payments and settlements.
According to the CBI chief, interconnecting payment systems and expanding the use of national currencies will reduce reliance on external financial channels.
He noted that this strategy would increase transaction speeds, lower costs, and enhance the security of commercial exchanges among members.
Hemmati added that Iran has already initiated technical, legal, and operational assessments for linking BRICS payment systems and stands ready to assist in drafting an operational roadmap for the initiative.
Furthermore, the Central Bank Governor highlighted Iran’s ongoing bid for membership in the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB), framing it as a vital step toward expanding development project financing, boosting investment cooperation, and deepening economic ties across member states.
