WANA (Sep 24) – The spokesperson of Iran’s Foreign Ministry said the real purpose of the United States in imposing increasing restrictions on Iranian diplomats and their families in New York is to disrupt Iran’s diplomatic activities at the United Nations.

In a post on X, Esmaeil Baghaei wrote that the “systematic harassment of Iranian diplomats by the host government has, just in the past week, prevented Iran from participating in several international meetings held outside the area designated by the U.S.”

Baghaei stressed that imposing what he described as “petty restrictions” on the movement and even daily shopping of Iranian diplomats is not only a blatant violation of U.S. obligations under the UN Headquarters Agreement, but also reveals “a new level of hostility” by the American administration toward Iranians.

While the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations should be an opportunity to reflect on the organization’s original goals of peace, cooperation, and respect for international law, the conduct of the United States as host country has reached a worrying point. Washington, he said, has not only subjected Iran’s delegation to the General Assembly to severe limitations on visas, residence, and movement, but has also imposed unjustifiable restrictions on the daily lives of the families of Iranian diplomats at Iran’s Permanent Mission in New York.

Such measures are in complete contradiction with the spirit and the letter of the 1947 Headquarters Agreement and long-standing diplomatic practice, raising serious questions about the credibility and impartiality of the United Nations as the common house of nations.
