WANA (Jul 26) – Iran’s foreign minister discussed the military attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea during a phone call with the European Union’s foreign policy chief, condemning the incident and calling for a strong response from the UN Security Council, the EU, and the international community. Separately, Iran’s Foreign Ministry summoned Ukraine’s chargé d’affaires in Tehran to formally protest the attack.

 

According to Iran’s Foreign Ministry, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described the attack on the Iranian commercial vessel as a criminal act and called for those responsible, along with their supporters, to be held accountable. He urged the UN Security Council, the European Union, and the broader international community to respond decisively.

 

The two sides also discussed developments in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz following Iran’s military response to U.S. strikes, stressing the need for diplomatic initiatives to prevent further escalation.

 

Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Ministry announced that Ukraine’s chargé d’affaires in Tehran had been summoned by Manouchehr Moradi, Assistant Foreign Minister and Director General for Eurasia, who conveyed Iran’s strong protest over what Tehran described as a hostile and criminal act.

 

The ministry said Iran reaffirmed its determination to defend its national security and interests, warning that attacks on the lives and property of Iranian citizens would not go unanswered.

 

In a separate statement, the Foreign Ministry said the attack on the Iranian commercial vessel in the early hours of August 3 caused an explosion aboard the ship, killing one sailor and injuring another. It described the incident as a violation of the UN Charter and an act of aggression that could further fuel regional instability and expand the conflict.

 

The ministry reiterated that Iran has not been a party to the Russia-Ukraine conflict and called on the UN Security Council, European countries, and all UN member states to take a responsible stance and hold those responsible for the attack accountable.

 

It also stated that, in accordance with the principles of international law and the inherent right of self-defense, Iran would safeguard its national security and interests, adding that responsibility for any consequences resulting from the incident would rest with Ukraine and its supporters.
