WANA (Nov 10) – Iran’s Government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani announced that Iran has reached the 10th place globally on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, with 29 registered cultural and historical sites. She emphasized that this achievement highlights the importance of “returning to our cultural and historical roots” and preserving what has been passed down from previous generations.

According to the latest update released by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in the summer of 2025, Italy, China, and Germany hold the top three positions with 61, 60, and 55 sites respectively.

Iran’s 29 UNESCO World Heritage sites reflect the country’s cultural, historical, and geographical diversity — from the grandeur of Persepolis and Naqsh-e Jahan Square in Isfahan, to the mysteries of Chogha Zanbil, Shahr-e Sukhteh (the Burnt City), and the vast Lut Desert.

Among Iran’s recognized sites are:

  • Bam Citadel, Bisotun, Soltaniyeh Dome, Pasargadae,
  • Tabriz Historic Bazaar Complex, The Persian Garden, Golestan Palace, The Historic City of Yazd,
  • Hyrcanian Forests, Iran’s Trans-Iranian Railway, Iranian Caravanserais, Cultural Landscape of Hawraman/Uramanat, and Hegmataneh.

Experts believe that the broad inclusion of Iranian heritage sites on the UNESCO list could significantly boost Iran’s cultural and historical tourism, reinforcing its position as a leading destination for world heritage tourism in the region.
