Iran Ready to Draft Framework for Cooperation with IAEA
WANA (Sep 09) – Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi on Tuesday announced Tehran’s readiness to draft a framework for cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in light of what he described as “illegal attacks by the United States and Israel.”
Araghchi made the remarks during a meeting in Cairo with his Egyptian counterpart, Badr Abdelatty, at the start of his diplomatic visit to Egypt. The two sides reviewed ongoing efforts to restore bilateral ties, voicing commitment to deepen cooperation in economic, trade, tourism, and cultural fields.
The ministers also discussed regional and international developments, with a focus on the humanitarian crisis in the occupied Palestinian territories. Both officials condemned the continuation of what they called “genocide in Gaza,” stressing the need to deliver aid, halt forced displacement, and end Israeli atrocities.
On Iran’s nuclear issue, Araghchi reiterated that Tehran’s stance is based on its rights under the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). He said recent U.S. and Israeli strikes undermined the UN Charter and international law, emphasizing that Iran remains prepared to define a new interaction framework with the IAEA “within the framework of parliamentary legislation.”
According to Iranian media, three rounds of talks between Tehran and the IAEA have already been held on the matter. Araghchi is scheduled to meet IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi later today in Cairo to continue discussions.
For his part, Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s support for the right of all NPT members to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes and expressed Cairo’s readiness to facilitate Iran-IAEA engagement.
