WANA (Sep 09) – The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has rejected what it described as “false claims” in the final statement of the Arab League Council of Foreign Ministers, reiterating Iran’s “indisputable sovereignty” over the islands of Abu Musa, Greater Tunb, and Lesser Tunb.

Sovereignty Over the Three Islands

In a statement issued on Sunday, the ministry condemned any territorial claims against Iran, stressing that the repetition of such “baseless allegations” would not alter the geographical, historical, or legal realities surrounding the islands. It added that all measures taken on the three islands were in line with Iran’s sovereign rights to safeguard their security and protect the country’s national interests.

Dismissal of Yemen Allegations

The ministry also dismissed allegations of arms shipments to Yemen, calling them unfounded. It argued that such accusations, often promoted by Israel, serve only to divert attention from the ongoing war in Gaza, as well as military actions in Syria, Lebanon, and Yemen. Iran emphasized that it pursues a policy of good neighborliness, respect for territorial integrity, and non-interference in the internal affairs of other states.

Role in Maritime Security

Highlighting its role in regional maritime security, the statement said Iran remains a key guarantor of safe navigation in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, and will continue to act responsibly to ensure freedom of passage under international law.

Call for Regional Unity Against Israel

The Foreign Ministry further underlined the need for regional stability through cooperation among neighboring countries and without interference from external actors. It welcomed the Arab League’s condemnation of Israel’s actions in Gaza, urging member states to adopt effective measures, including suspending political, economic, and diplomatic ties with Israel.

Weapons of Mass Destruction Concern

The statement also drew attention to Israel’s possession of weapons of mass destruction, calling them an “immediate and real threat” to regional and global peace. Referring to Iran’s 1974 initiative for a Middle East free of weapons of mass destruction, the ministry called for collective action to pressure the international community—and particularly Israel’s supporters—into eliminating such arsenals.

Earlier in May, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei also rejected the Arab League’s position on the islands, advising the bloc to acknowledge the region’s unchangeable historical and geographical facts instead of repeating unfounded claims.
